RECEPTION AGE CHILDREN

The Local Education Authority's admission arrangements allow children to start school at the start of the school year in which their fifth birthday falls:

Birthdays     September to December Children start full-time in September
Birthdays     January to April Children may start part-time in September, then full time in January
Birthdays      May to August Children may start part-time in September, increasing to full time in after Easter

Please note that, by law, a child must start full time attendance at school at the start of the term that follows their fifth birthday. West Sussex schools offer the earlier starting dates listed above, but there is no obligation for parents to send their children to school so young.

Reception children and their parents are invited to visit during the term before the children start school, at agreed times.

Reception children do not usually start school on the very first day of term, but a few days later when the older pupils have settled. All the details about visits, starting dates, times, etc, are sent to parents in good time, and discussed at a meeting when questions can be asked and answered. We hope you will tell us all about your child so that we quickly learn to understand her/him and can avoid problems in the early days.

Above all, we hope that you and your child will be happy with the school, and that the early days will be successful and enjoyable for us all.

OLDER CHILDREN

We are used to welcoming children of any age from four to eleven at any time during a term when their families move into a new house. We are aware of the possible stresses for children changing schools and we do all we can to help them to settle in quickly.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

There are three secondary schools in Horsham for children aged 11-16 years: Millais School (for girls), Forest School (for boys) and Tanbridge House School (co-educational). Parents of children in Y6 are invited to express a preference for one of these schools, but a place at the chosen school cannot be guaranteed. We have links with the secondary schools to ensure continuity for the children. All three schools provide opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to make familiarisation visits.
